The "Heart of the St. John Valley."

The Greater Madawaska area is well known for its friendly people and great hospitality. Serving as the center of Acadian culture in Maine.

The Board of Appeals (BOA), more than any other local board, generally performs the same function at the local level as an appeals court judge. Like a judge, the appeals board must decide difficult questions in accordance with local ordinances, State laws, and court cases.

The Board of Appeals consists of a least three members serving three-year staggered terms. To qualify to sit on the Board, a person must be 18 years old, a resident of the State, and a U.S. citizen. A board member is appointed by the Board of Selectpeople and then sworn in by Town Clerk or a Notary Public.

The Maine Freedom of Access Act requires the Appeals Board to allow the general public to attend board meetings and workshops, to open its records for public inspection, and to give prior public notice of its meetings. The Board of Appeals meetings are posted in the local newspaper. They are also posted at the Town Office, the Police Department, Morin's Variety, the St. David Post Office, Twin Rivers-Catalog and Twin Rivers-Bond. Meeting minutes of the Appeals Board are kept as the official meeting record and made available to the public after being approved by the Board.
