Vital Records, Genealogy

Vital Records can be obtained from the Town Clerk's Office, or you can contact the
State of Maine's Bureau of Vital Statistics in Augusta.


Birth Certificates

Birth Records are available at the Town Office where the child was born, at the town office where the mother was living at the time of birth.
Birth Certificates that are older than 75 years from today are considered open records.

Death Certificates

Death Records are available at the Town Office in the Municipality where the person passed away or at the Town Office of the place of residence of the deceased.
Death Certificates that are older than 25 years from today are considered open records.

Marriage License
To obtain a Marriage License, at least one party must be a Madawaska resident, or both parties must be from out of state. Both parties must appear at the Clerk's office together in order for the Marriage License to be issued. If there have been any previous marriages, certified copies of the most recent disillusionment must be supplied. The cost of a Marriage License is $40.
The Marriage License is valid for 90 days.

Please call the Clerk's office (207) 728-6351 to schedule an appointment to file Marriage Intentions (save time and fill out prior to appointment) and obtain a marriage license. 

Marriage Certificates
Marriage Records are available at the Town Office in the Municipality where the couple applied for the license, and in Augusta at the Bureau of Vital Statistics. Marriage License that are older than 50 years from today are considered open records. 

Divorce Decrees 
Divorce Records are not filed at the municipal level. Certified copies of divorces must be obtained from the court where the divorce took place. 

Genealogy
Genealogists who have obtained a Researcher ID card from the Maine CDC/ODRVS may request non-certified copies of Birth, Death, and Marriage records. In order to receive certified copies of vital records, genealogists must also show direct and legitimate interest. Personal Identification must be shown to receive access to vital records.

A request may take up to 24-48 hours to process a request. EDRS requests are subjected to State processing time limits. 
Cost: Certified Copies are $15.00 per copy for the first copy, and $6.00 for additional copies only if requested at the same time.
